True life confession: I used to not like donuts. I saw the light a few years ago and has since made up for more than a lifetime’s worth of donuts, beignets, crullers, and other sweet fried dough specialties. These crullers from Lil’s Cafe in Kittery, Maine were highly recommended by friends and strangers.
They said, “stop by Kittery, even just to grab crullers from Lil’s Cafe” and “it’s worth the trip, and I recommend buying more for the road” and “trick your husband into buying two crullers for you” (okay, that last one was from me.) These crullers are definitely worth the stop, the trip, and the tricks. Slightly crisp on the outside, soft and tender on the inside, with a just-thick-enough glaze that will make you lick your lips and your fingertips. We also had breakfast sandwiches (bacon, egg, and cheese on a crumbly, buttery biscuit) but the crullers were the star of the show. Now very highly recommended by me as well.
