French Onion Salisbury Steak
French Onion Salisbury Steak- tender ground beef patties are covered in cheese and a deliciously flavored onion gravy. Serve over mashed potatoes for a wonderfully comforting meal.
Everything gets cooked in one pan for easy clean-up. Salisbury Steak is one of my favorite meals to make with ground beef. When it comes to family meals, ground beef recipes are a real winner. Such an economical way to feed a family of hungry eaters.
This recipe has lots of onion flavor. The ground beef patties are pretty standard with a few panko crumbs as filler and an egg as binder, plus a few seasonings. I like to top these French Onion Salisbury Steak patties with both Parmesan cheese and provolone cheese. You could use swiss or gruyere instead of provolone.
Two large onions cooked in butter form the base of the gravy. A little thyme and tomato paste add additional flavor.
French Onion Salisbury Steak Recipe Tips:
I like to use ground beef that is 80 to 85% lean. Any leaner and you won’t have enough fat to keep the patties really juicy.
Optional- add 1/4 cup of red wine to the gravy when you add the broth.
You need one large skillet/pan for this recipe. You’ll cook the patties in it and remove them, leaving all the juices for flavor. Then cook the onions, make the gravy, and return the patties to the sauce. Add the cheese and simmer utnil the patties are cooked through and the cheese is melted.
